There are two trims for the new Cherokee.
Altitude Lux: The base model, the Altitude Lux, is a well-equipped model riding on 17-inch wheels. In this model, there are features like heated front seats, leather upholstery, an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an integrated navigation system.
Trailhawk: As the top-level trim, the Trailhawk is also the most rugged option. The Trailhawk lacks the Altitude Lux's leather upholstery and power-adjustable front passenger seat as standard, but it offers more off-road features. Standard features include an upgraded 4WD system, upgraded off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, and underbody skid plates.
Two engine options power the Cherokee model. There's the base engine, a 2.4-liter 180-hp inline-four-cylinder that produces 171 lb.-ft of torque. Then there's the more powerful 2.0-liter 270-hp model that outputs 295 lb. of torque. Both models feature a nine-speed automatic transmission and come with all-wheel drive.
In testing, the EPA found that the 2.4-liter model got around 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the 2.0-liter engine got an estimated 20 miles in the city and 26 miles on the highway.
From the outside, the Jeep Cherokee looks like a standard SUV. Though with a unique seven-chevron design for the grille. Head into the cabin, and you'll find a more distinctive design that offers supportive seats and easy-to-use controls.
Given that the Cherokee is a small SUV, the back row does feel a little cramped, especially for adults. But the cargo area is spacious, and there's plenty of interior cubby storage. When loading items into the cargo area, there are about 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 54.7 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded down.
With two powerful engines under the hood, it should be no surprise that the Jeep Cherokee can tow a generous amount of equipment. When equipped with the 270-hp engine, the crossover can tow upwards of 4,000 pounds, while the base engine tows about 3,500 pounds. Either way, this model is great for hauling boats, trailers, or even campers.
